Virginia Tech RB Shai McKenzie sentenced to 15 days in jail
Suspended Virginia Tech running back Shai McKenzie has been sentenced for 15 days in jail.
McKenzie was suspended in March and sentenced Thursday for having consensual sex with a minor, a misdemeanor. McKenzie, 19, and another Virginia Tech student were detained after two girls, ages 14 and 15, said the two had sex with them.
McKenzie was also charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor but the charge was not prosecuted. The two men reportedly met the girls via social media. The incident happened in the middle of February and investigators completed a warrant for McKenzie's DNA on February 27.
According to WDBJ, a Virginia Tech spokesperson said McKenzie's status with the team had not changed. The site said McKenzie is expected to report for his sentence on July 17 and will also have to serve 50 hours of community service.
McKenzie was cleared by a Virginia Tech student committee in late March of any misconduct. Had he been found guilty of any violations he could have faced university punishment.
Turk said the three misconduct violations McKenzie had to answer to before Tech's student conduct committee were described as sexual misconduct, disorderly conduct and violation of university policy. Turk said there were no additional violations beyond the three detailed. He added the decision rendered by the student conduct committee will have no bearing on the legal proceedings.
McKenzie had 269 yards rushing and three touchdowns as a freshman in 2014. He was a four-star recruit in the class of 2014 according to Rivals and the No. 24 running back in the country.
